Our ecosystem

An ecosystem comprising 4 joint research units affiliated with Aix-Marseille Université, the CNRS and to Centrale Méditerranée (School) that is committed to high-level training and research.

Our research initiatives

Understanding and predicting the mechanisms of deformation, movement and transfer in fluids and solids is a major challenge in the study and design of many complex physical systems found in nature or manufactured by humans. The development of innovative diagnostics for advanced digital methods and models and experiments addresses a broad range of complex multidisciplinary problems, from fundamental to applied research.

This diversity and complementarity of initiatives around theoretical and digital modelling as well as experimentation is a key area at our Institute, which strives to strengthen development synergies and the sharing of tools and digital and experimental platforms.

The Institute for mechanics and engineering proposes a set of initiatives through calls for research projects, the funding of selected researchers, and the recruitment of post-doctoral students for projects that help to structure the Institute and that deal with leading scientific questions associated with major societal challenges.

Elisa Ghiringhelli
Post-doctoral fellow IMI-IRPHE
The IMI-funded project I'm working on aims to understand how ultrasound affects the microenvironment of bone cells. The long-term aim will be to be able to personalize treatment for bone diseases such as osteoporosis. I chose this subject because improving techniques for medicine is close to my heart and, more specifically, it would help me in my specialization in imaging and microfluidic techniques. My work is shared between two of the institute's four laboratories, the IRPHE and the LMA, enabling me to carry out interdisciplinary research and [...]
